Coffee In America
Since August is National Coffee Month, let’s talk a bit about why coffee came to be so important
in America.
The presence of coffee in America dates back to the Revolutionary War. When the war against
the British broke out and Americans could no longer have their cup of tea, they switched to
readily available coffee. Coffee has long been a member of America’s war efforts: During
the Civil War, many Union soldiers had their rifles modified to hold a compact coffee grinder
in the stock. During both World Wars the United States actually set up coffee roasting plants
overseas to ensure that soldiers were getting fresh coffee in the European Theatre. Coffee
helped fuel our industrial and economic revolution as a country. Before the New York Stock
Exchange existed, there was the New York Coffee Exchange. Coffee has become the second
most traded commodity in the world.
To say that coffee is an important drink to America is an understatement. America is a country
that has grown up with coffee.
