Using a Press Pot is really a simple matter. First I recommend pre-heating your Press Pot. You can use hot tap water for this step since you are just using it to warm up the brewing equipment. Next us the standard 2 Tbsp. to 6 oz. coffee to water ratio. Be sure to use the freshest coffee possible. Make sure that you use a coarse grind, too fine a grind will clog the screen and make it hard to plunge down. Pour a little bit of hot water over the grinds and watch them bloom for a second. Then pour in a little more and stir or swirl it around to make sure you don’t have any clumps. Fill it up the rest of the way and pop the lid on. After about 4-6 minutes you can plunge the screen down and pour yourself of some amazing coffee.

Home brewing with a Press Pot: part 2

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010For those of you who want to get the most flavor possible out of your coffee, I recommend a French Press. While many people are intimidated by this brewing method, it is surprisingly simple and affordable. There are many brands, sizes, and price ranges to choose from. When picking out a size keep in mind that the brew that comes out of a press pot is much stronger than most drip coffee. So if you usually drink half a pot of drip coffee, you may only need a cup of pressed coffee. The reason for this is that instead of dripping through the coffee grounds, the water in a press pot is poured directly over the coffee and allowed to “steep” for 4-6 minutes. This long term direct contact yields a very potent cup with lots of sediment in the the bottom and lots of oil on top. Don’t worry, those are both good things.
