Drip Coffee, Part 2: Filters

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009
  • When using a drip coffee maker you have the choice between disposable paper filters, and a reusable metal screen.
    • The best metal screen filters are gold plated, gold is non reactive and will not alter coffees flavors at all. In addition, gold plated filters will last for years of everyday use since they will never rust or tarnish. They may cost a little more, but it could be the last filter you ever purchase.
    • If you prefer to use a paper filter, try to stay away from bleached filters. They may look all nice and clean, but can give coffee a hint of notebook-papery taste. Go for natural or oxygen-cleansed filters for a more true-to-life flavor.
    • Metal screen filters will yield a more full bodied cup with small amounts of sediment.
    • Paper filters will yield a cleaner cup with practically zero sediment.
    • When using a paper filter, try rinsing the filter under running water before you brew. It helps wash some of the papery flavor out of the filter. It also ensures that your coffee is soaking up the water instead of your filter.
